Night 2

I have to admit that night two in Africa was the most interesting. We had arrived in Gulu at around 11pm. There were not many lights on when we arrived and the city was mostly black. When we were traveling, we got word that the Invisible Children hostel we were planning on staying in, had decided to shut down the hostel part of the house and become strictly an intern house. So we were told that we would have to make other arrangements. Seeing that we had no idea where in the city we were, and would have to stay in a "Hotel", we were a bit nervous. We took Bodas (motorbike taxi's) into Gulu town, and checked into a motel. It was a room around 12X12, with one small window with bars to cover it. The glass had been partly kicked and smashed in. The entire city did not have electricity so we were given a candle to see our way to the shared latrine out our door and in an ally of sorts that connected to the hotel. Our mosquito net had massive holes in it, so it was almost useless, and we were right next to a bar/club where people danced until 4am. (They use car batteries to power their stereos when there is no power.) As we finally began to fall asleep, a pack of 10 or so wild dogs came right outside our window and start to howl at the same time as well. So we were up most of the night in annoyance and a little bit of fear of ignorance of our surroundings.
